Self-Portrait Challenge - Real Beauty

spc challenge prompt, political week 2

Another one of my politcal passions is REAL BEAUTY. I work towards developing self-esteem in young women. By building our character, mind, and hearts we evoke true beauty. Fashion, beauty, style and mainstream magazines are guilty of promoting unbelievable body image goals for women. Images are airbrushed and altered severely and archetypes promote anorexia and bulimia. If Barbie were a real woman, she would topple over! This pic is of me (ctr) and my cousins doing our version of Charlie's Angels. We are nontypical beauties!

Ok, this photo is really fun, and I agree with your thoughts. Have you ever seen that Dove/Real Beauty ad where they show time lapse photography of a lady undergoing complete transformation from "off the street" look to a magazine cover? I think it's on youtube. I was blown away. Beauty does not come from looking the same, it comes from all the variety.

They say Marilyn Monroe was a size 14, look how much we've become so distorted since her time...now you have to be a size 0.
Where would we be if we were all the same...

Love this idea - wish we all had the confidence to apply the message to our own lives more easily and often. Great picture.

Any high school girl can tell you that body and weight conciousness is probably one of the top things discussed or thought about throughout the day. it really only takes a look around the cafteria to see how weight concious girls are, its either the plastic cup of granola, carrots, or nothing at all. The eating disorders discussed in health class do nothing to counteract the messages girls get EVERYDAY from magazines,t.v, guys, and the forever shrinking clothing sizes at the mall. Anyways I think your great for bringing this issue to the forfront of our minds.
