Emerging Artists who Caught My Eye Part II

The second artist that caught my eye during the Wesleyan Senior thesis exhibit was Nicolina Baxter. Her thesis show was entitled 'Flay' and I only got to see her in passing while she walked in the gallery at closing time to break down the exhibit.

Her sculptural forms are another aspect of my artistic tastes and motivations, that many don't know about me, since in a past life I sculpted as much as I painted! Nicolina's work is figurative yet by its very segmented state also abstracted which makes it even more intriguing. I loved the lay out, expanse and visceral feeling of the 'skin' she developed. In regards to the 'skin', I'm a sucker for clever and varied uses of materials and I'm suspecting this is an ingenious use of mold-making latex.

As part of the exhibit there was also a 'voyeur box' which I've made use of in my work in the past - love them and when you looked through the peep hole you are somewhat assaulted with an up close and intimate red/orange hue of fingers moving quickly to peel back the 'skin'.

As I stated earlier I only got to see Nicolina as the gallery was closing. And since I only had a chance to say 'I really enjoyed your work' to her as I was walking out of the building, I couldn't take a photo of her besides it like I did with the others. So I managed to scoop her fb pic up - hope she doesn't mind (its a great pic anyway!)

For all of you concerned I've had chronic bronchitis my whole life (since a child) and any cold often turns right into the bronchitis. However, since I received a flu shot this year, I managed to stave off getting any bout of bronchitis until now...I guess the vaccine wore off. NO worries, I will survive!

Now the next artist and last artist from this trip is drastically different and another real treat so stay tuned!

As for my work, its coming along (though slowly) I think I'll have to share another progress report with you soon.

I'm sad I've been neglecting my Etsy shop and crafting these days, but I can only do so much with two hands...but Oh how I wish I had more!! Ok so heres a dive from serious art connoisseur to silly question time! Yeah, I would want more hands and a ceaseless pool of energy!- SO YOUR TURN- tell me if you had a superhero power what would it be???

I absolutely love this exhibit. It's very different and unusual, but in a good way. I love how the latex represents the skin, and how it is peeling off. Now I really can't wait until the final feature~

wow, amazing, powerful stuff. really awesome ideas here. (it kind of looks like my back, which is pealing from sunburn right now.) if i had a superpower... it would probably be to create a general calm in chaotic situations. like, for example, this morning my mom was freaking out about a leak. if i had my superpower, i could have restored her back to calm and she could have handled the situation more easily, plus it wouldn't have put a huge damper on her whole day!

check out my first draft of my logo and give me some feedback!

I loved this and am looking forward to the next one, too bad you're only doing three. Or will there be more eventually?

What you have with neglecting Etsy, I totally have the same thing. Even though I have quite a few items, I feel like I'm still in the early phases. But now I have to work on my portfolio to get into art school, so Etsy is already put on hold. Oh well, I think I can pick it up again this summer.

Oh I forgot to mention the superhero power. I'd choose to be able to manipulate time. So that I could just freeze it so I could have more of it and to sometimes flash forward or back.

What would you choose?

Very cool art!

Superpowers? Um... I often dream of flying and that's pretty cool... Immortality might be nice... But perhaps knowing the future a day or two in advance could be advantageous.... Nah... I think flying! ^_^

Thanks for sharing.

My super power hero would be someone who can make anyone smile, seriously, we could solve world peace if we just smile some more. ;)

LOVE the pieces in this exhibition. The shedding of the old to renew one's self...love it!!! (my initial thought)

Hmmm superhero powers...........
Being able to travel at the speed of light would be nice along with breathing under water. Then again I would love to travel through time and dimensions and have the ability to slow time down. (it all goes by too fast) It's hard to just choose one at this moment in time. ;D

I love this collection and it brings back memories of your past exhibits. I love the use of latex and the draping.
Glad to hear the new work is coming along well and that you are recuperating a bit, I'll see you at your show and am likely bringing my friend Liz with me. She's works with me at Columbia but is also studying at FIT.

P-peeling back a skin?? *shivers*

thats a really cool art exhibit though. :D

As for the superhero power... I'd like to be able to fly, thank you. I'm really attracted to the idea...

Cool art but it looks a bit disturbing (to me at least!) lol

Super power eh? Erm....definitely teleportation so I can just teleport myself back home whenever I miss my family instead of having to fly 16 hours!!

I would love to be able to fly. Not at the speed of a bullet or anything. even floating is good. just to feel the wind. to be up high
